Premier League braces for an open window as Maresca move nears and deals queue up

Main stories

The Premier League's summer transfer window opens on Monday, 15 June, and clubs are poised to formalise a string of pre-agreed deals once it does. The timing is shaped by the World Cup, with much of the early business arranged in advance while many players are on international duty.

Manchester City's appointment of Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola's successor is expected to be confirmed imminently, with a three-year contract agreed and a compensation settlement with Chelsea the final administrative step. City have lined up the Italian — Guardiola's former assistant — to take over after a decade that brought more than 20 trophies.

Liverpool's reset, by contrast, is already complete. Andoni Iraola has been confirmed as head coach on a two-year deal, succeeding the sacked Arne Slot, in a managerial overhaul that also saw Manchester United make Michael Carrick permanent earlier in the window.

Transfer and squad notes

Newcastle have been among the most active, completing the signing of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims for a reported fee of around £24m and handing veteran defender Fabian Schär a one-year extension despite an injury-hit campaign.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have confirmed Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool, adding the Scotland captain to Roberto De Zerbi's squad. With Maresca's arrival looming, City are reported to be eyeing first signings including Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, though that deal is not yet agreed.

What it means for the league

The off-season has been defined by an unusual scale of managerial change, with Guardiola, Slot and others out and Maresca, Iraola and Carrick among those shaping new eras at the top of the table. That churn frames a window in which several of the biggest clubs will be rebuilding squads to fit incoming bosses.

With the window opening as the World Cup gathers pace, clubs are front-loading priority targets and quick, low-risk deals — free transfers, extensions and pre-arranged moves — before the market accelerates later in the summer.
