Maresca's City appointment nears as Newcastle open their summer with Jaouen

Main stories

Manchester City are on the verge of confirming Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola's successor, with reports indicating the announcement is imminent once compensation with Chelsea is settled. The 46-year-old, who left Stamford Bridge in January, has agreed a three-year contract to 2029 and would take over from Guardiola after a decade in charge; the appointment is not yet official.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have moved early in the market, completing the signing of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims. The 20-year-old France Under-21 international joins on a long-term deal for a reported fee of around £24m (€28.5m), having kept 15 clean sheets in the French second tier last season — making him one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever signed from that division.

Transfer and squad notes

Newcastle also tied down experience at the other end of the squad, confirming a one-year contract extension for 34-year-old defender Fabian Schär despite an injury-hit campaign that kept him out since January.

Tottenham have added Andy Robertson on a free transfer, the Scotland captain leaving Liverpool when his contract expires to join Roberto De Zerbi's side on a reported two-year deal. The move is one of several involving long-serving players changing clubs as the window approaches.

Liverpool's own reset, meanwhile, is complete: Andoni Iraola has been confirmed as head coach on a two-year contract, succeeding the sacked Arne Slot after a search that also drew in Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace.

What it means for the league

The summer is being defined by upheaval in the dugout as much as the market. Guardiola, Slot and others are out, with Maresca and Iraola among the incomers and Michael Carrick already confirmed permanently at Manchester United, leaving several of the division's biggest clubs rebuilding around new managers.

With the window not opening until 15 June and many players away at the World Cup, much of the early business is being pre-agreed and announced in stages. Newcastle's quick work on Jaouen and Schär is a marker that clubs are moving to lock in priority targets before the tournament fully takes hold.
