Mourinho's Real Madrid unveil Konaté and Bernardo Silva as Barcelona land Gordon

Main stories

Real Madrid officially confirmed the free signing of Ibrahima Konaté, the defender joining when his Liverpool contract expires on June 30 on a four-year deal to 2030, according to the club's announcement and Sky Sports. The France international is the third arrival of José Mourinho's rebuild and strengthens a back line the new coach has prioritised.

Madrid also presented Bernardo Silva, signed as a free agent after his Manchester City contract ran out, on a two-year contract. The Portugal midfielder's reunion with compatriot Mourinho was reported by ESPN and Sky Sports as central to the move winning out over rival interest.

Barcelona responded with their own marquee capture, completing the signing of England forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle on a five-year deal. ESPN and Sky Sports put the fee at around €70m plus €10m in add-ons, with Barcelona moving ahead of Bayern Munich to seal the winger after his medical.

Transfer and squad notes

Madrid reached agreement with Chelsea for left-back Marc Cucurella, reported by ESPN at roughly €55m plus add-ons on a six-year deal; the move was agreed on June 14 and is expected to be formalised after Spain's World Cup, so treat it as agreed rather than complete.

The club is also closing on Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries, with reports indicating Madrid will meet a buyout clause of around €20m, though the deal had not been officially confirmed at the time of writing. Until the clubs announce it, the move remains reported rather than done.

Mourinho's overhaul follows his appointment on a three-year contract earlier in June, after Florentino Pérez's re-election cleared the way for the Portuguese's return to the Bernabéu.

What it means for the league

La Liga's two giants are setting the early tempo while much of the squad pool is at the World Cup. Mourinho's Madrid have leaned heavily on the free and Premier League markets — Bernardo Silva and Konaté on frees, with Cucurella and Dumfries agreed — to reshape a spine quickly, and Barcelona answered with a club-record-scale outlay for Gordon. With several of these deals set to be rubber-stamped after the tournament, the window's defining business is being front-loaded before pre-season.
