Napoli land Højlund as Serie A's managerial merry-go-round spins on

Main stories

Napoli have made Rasmus Højlund's move permanent, completing the obligation-to-buy from his loan after second-placed qualification for the Champions League triggered the clause. Both clubs confirmed the deal, worth €44m on top of last summer's €6m loan fee, taking the total to around €50m; the 23-year-old scored 16 goals across his loan season.

Massimiliano Allegri remains on course to succeed Antonio Conte at Napoli, with an agreement on a two-year contract in place. The move is not yet official, however, as Allegri and Milan continue to negotiate the terms of his severance after his dismissal.

AC Milan's own search has narrowed, with Oliver Glasner reported as the frontrunner after meeting the club. According to Football Italia, Milan are weighing a two-man shortlist of Glasner — a free agent from 30 June and fresh from winning the Conference League with Crystal Palace — and Al-Ahli's Matthias Jaissle; no decision has been confirmed.

Transfer and squad notes

Inter are set to lose Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid, who have moved to trigger the right-back's €20m release clause. The Netherlands international underwent a medical on Wednesday while on international duty, with reports indicating a contract to 2030 and an official announcement expected to follow Real Madrid's board elections; Madrid acted early to secure the clause at its floor price.

Maurizio Sarri, meanwhile, has agreed to take over at Atalanta, reuniting with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli after leaving Lazio. The veteran is set to sign through 2029 and replaces Raffaele Palladino in the Bergamo dugout.

What it means for the league

The bench reshuffle is sweeping: Conte out at Napoli and Allegri out at Milan, Allegri then heading to Naples, Sarri to Atalanta and Glasner in Milan's sights, all on top of Domenico Tedesco's earlier arrival at Bologna. Several of the league's European contenders will start next season under new management.

The market is moving in parallel, with Champions League qualifiers such as Napoli locking down key men while Inter cash in on a strikingly low release clause. Serie A's 2026-27 fixtures are due to be published on 5 June, giving the reshaped squads their first sense of the calendar ahead.
