Mourinho returns to Real Madrid as the Spanish giants reshape their squads
Main stories
José Mourinho has been confirmed as Real Madrid's new head coach, returning to the club he led from 2010 to 2013. The appointment followed Florentino Pérez's re-election on 7 June, with Real Madrid reported to have paid Benfica the €15m release clause on 9 June; Mourinho has signed a two-year deal with the option of a third, taking him to 2028 or 2029.
Pérez's renewed mandate has also unlocked Real Madrid's first signings, with France centre-back Ibrahima Konaté arriving on a free from Liverpool on a deal to 2030 and Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries joining for a reported €20m after his release clause was triggered, also through 2030.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have reshaped their attack around Anthony Gordon, signed from Newcastle in a deal worth around €70m on a five-year contract, as veteran Robert Lewandowski prepares to leave on a free.
Transfer and squad notes
A move for Dušan Vlahović has been firmly rebuffed across Spain. According to reporting, the Juventus striker's representatives approached Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, but all three turned the offer down; the situation remains unresolved.
Barcelona are still searching for a centre-back after an earlier approach for Inter's Alessandro Bastoni fell through in May. Names linked in the Spanish press include Manchester City's Joško Gvardiol, Real Betis' Natan and RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba, though none of those moves is agreed.
What it means for the league
Real Madrid's summer has crystallised quickly since the election: a marquee managerial return in Mourinho, paired with a defensive rebuild in Konaté and Dumfries, sets the tone for Pérez's new term. Barcelona, the reigning champions, are answering with their own overhaul up front, banking on Gordon while moving on from Lewandowski.
With the Spanish window still to open fully and many players at the World Cup, much of the business beyond these headline moves remains at the targeting stage, leaving the centre-back and striker markets as the next fronts for both giants.
